FIELD NOTE / SECURITY OPERATIONS / TRIAGE

From a signal to a defensible decision.

An endpoint alert is the start of an investigation — not the conclusion. The goal is to identify the behavior, validate context and recommend an appropriate response.

Security is in
the details.

Accurate incident response depends on a chain of evidence: process behavior, signatures, persistence, timing and context.

01 / CONTEXT

What needs answering

Why was the alert triggered? Which process or file was involved? Was it signed? Is the behavior consistent with expected software, a false positive, or a true compromise?

02 / METHOD

Investigation flow

Review alert context and affected assets; inspect process paths and command-lines where available; validate file signatures and metadata; collect relevant Windows event evidence and correlate observations.

03 / VALIDATION

From indicators to findings

Document what is verified and what remains unknown. Separate suspicious indicators from confirmed malicious activity, and identify containment or tuning steps proportional to confidence.

04 / TOOLS

Relevant technology

Microsoft Defender for Endpoint, PowerShell, Authenticode validation, Windows Event Logs and endpoint telemetry.

Scope & confidentiality: Examples intentionally exclude actual incident names, device identifiers, employee details and customer logs.
