Security is in
the details.
Accurate incident response depends on a chain of evidence: process behavior, signatures, persistence, timing and context.
What needs answering
Why was the alert triggered? Which process or file was involved? Was it signed? Is the behavior consistent with expected software, a false positive, or a true compromise?
Investigation flow
Review alert context and affected assets; inspect process paths and command-lines where available; validate file signatures and metadata; collect relevant Windows event evidence and correlate observations.
From indicators to findings
Document what is verified and what remains unknown. Separate suspicious indicators from confirmed malicious activity, and identify containment or tuning steps proportional to confidence.
Relevant technology
Microsoft Defender for Endpoint, PowerShell, Authenticode validation, Windows Event Logs and endpoint telemetry.
Scope & confidentiality: Examples intentionally exclude actual incident names, device identifiers, employee details and customer logs.
